Forgive what's surely a noob question, but is there a way to use my iPhone to scan bar codes so I don't have to hold each book up to my Mac camera?

In Pocketpedia go to any collection and press to add a new book on the top right. Instead of searching press the camera button to start the scan video. Tap the Mac icon on the bottom right. This will change Pocketpedia to send the scans over Wifi over to Bookpedia. Should you not be on the same network they will be stored until you tap this icon again on the same network as Bookpedia.
