Synching your Pedia data to Pocketpedia
To sync information from your Mac to Pocketpedia,
Troubleshooting:
Be sure to connect the Wi-Fi option on your iPhone/iPod touch. You can do this in Settings > Wi-Fi.
If you do not have a wireless network, you can create a temporary one with your Mac. Turn on the Airport and choose "Create Network" from the Airport menu at the top of your screen. Then connect your iPhone to that new network.
If the sync button doesn't appear in Pocketpedia, make sure you have your Firewall turned off or set to allow connections with the Pedias. (That option is available in the System Preferences/Sharing/Firewall if you're on Tiger 10.4 or System Preferences/Security/Firewall if you're on Leopard 10.5.)
- Run your Pedia program(s) and Pocketpedia.
- Make sure both your Mac and your iPhone/iPod touch are connected to the same wireless network.
- Tap the 'Sync' button on the collection screen.
- If you have more than one Pedia program, choose which one you'd like to sync with.
- Authorize the process on your Mac (first time sync only).

The details view
The menu bar lets you see additional information about an entry.
- tap the speech bubble to see reviews (those voted most helpful on Amazon)
- tap the horizontal lines to see the summary for the entry
- tap the rectangle to see the large cover image
Tap the green organizing button to add an entry to your collections. If you don't have a collection yet, Pocketpedia will prompt you to create one. Or if you have more than one collection already, choose which collection you'd like to add the entry to.
In the results, after an entry has been added to Pocketpedia, the organizing button changes to a collection button. Tapping it takes you to the entry in the collection. To add more than one copy of an entry, use the action button (see below).
In the collections, the organizing button changes to an action button. The action button lets you move, copy, borrow or delete an entry. To delete a collection, use the swipe movement (see below).
To delete an entry or a collection, swipe your finger across it and tap the Delete button. Alternatively, use the action button on the details view of an entry.
The stars represent the Amazon rating for the entry. If the entry is in one of your Pocketpedia collections, assign your own star rating by dragging your finger across the stars. (This is not yet possible with entries synched from the Pedias because there is no backwards synching at the moment.)
Tap the 'Go to Amazon' button to be taken directly to the entry's page on Amazon.
Sorting your entries
When you sync your database from the Mac, Pocketpedia automatically takes over the sort order you have set in the Pedias. So if your Library is sorted by 'Title' and your Wish List is sorted by 'Release', these sort orders will be kept in Pocketpedia. At the bottom of each collection in Pocketpedia you will see what the collection is sorted by and how many entries it contains.
To sort a collection in Pocketpedia, tap the action button at the top of the collection and choose which field you'd like to sort by.
Tips and tricks
- To quickly get to the search field at the beginning of a collection, double-tap the status bar (at the very top of your screen).
- If you have a large Pedia collection and want to save time on synching (and space on your iPhone), go into your iPhone Settings > Pocketpedia and set 'Large Covers' to OFF. Now Pocketpedia will only copy over the thumbnail covers for your entries.
Please note - when you tap the cover image button for an entry while you are on a wireless network, Pocketpedia will still download the large cover for the entry and store it. - Even though the synching between your Mac and Pocketpedia works via wireless connection, keeping your iPhone plugged into your computer with the USB cable is a good idea because it prevents the device from shutting down to preserve battery and cutting off the synching. (Especially during the first sync, which takes longer.) The screen will still dim even with the device plugged in but synching will continue in the background.
- To choose an entry at random, for those times when you can't decide which movie to watch or what album to listen to, just shake your iPhone from side to side and let Pocketpedia choose for you.
- If you are on Tiger or have an external firewall you can also open the following static ports for the Pedias: 8110 for DVDpedia, 8120 for Bookpedia, 8130 for CDpedia and 8140 for Gamepedia.
- Please note - because there is no backward synching option in Pocketpedia yet, your Pedia collections and Pocketpedia collections are kept separate. Certain functions, such as move, copy and borrow are only available for the entries in your Pocketpedia collection, not those synched over from the Pedias. To manage your Pedia collections, use your desktop Pedias.
