To ISO or not to ISO

Post by Bellamy »

What are the +'s and -'s of ripping in ISO vs Video-TS vs VOB's? Also what aps should I use to rip each file?

Rip to ISO is much better. It's can be larger than 4GB if you do not want to burn DVDs and you only deal with 1 file. Once you have the ISO on your hard drive, you can mount it virtually and you have access to all the VOBs in the Video-TS folder. The Virtual Daemon manager V 4.10 does that for you. It's free on the web. VLC can play ISO or the VOBs mounted by the virtual Daemon manager program (all this for PC. I did not play much with the Mac side.) DVDFab5 is an excellent program to rip to ISO. It also converts ISO to AVI for a number of devices such as handheld, Ipod, PDAs. It's a two step process. First, rip to ISO on hard drive to play at 720p with Apple's DVD player, then use the ISO (after you got the ISO, you no longer need the original DVD) to make AVIs to play using VLC. DVDPedia can link to ISO or AVI and it will start either the DVD player or VLC.
