BP: Search field shortcut, and hotkey issues

Just that: a hotkey to select the search field on the top/right of the main Bookpedia window. Perhaps Command-Option-F, since Command-Shift-F is already taken.

For that matter, is Command-Shift-F really the right shortcut for "Add Manually"? It's not "finding" anything (the implication in a Command shortcut starting with "F").

Personally, I wish Command-N had been used instead of Command-F--adding a new book is done FAR more frequently than adding a new Collection and is thus a more useful shortcut and more deserving of the "Command-N means New something or other" usage. Yes, you're searching Amazon, et al, thus I can sort of see the "Find" aspect, but the menu item is Add, not Find, and that's what you're really doing: adding a new item to the Library; this makes Command-Shift-N for Add Manually even more logical.

And this way the logical Command-F could have been reserved for searching the Library or Collection.

The F shortcut is from the early days (when there was no other type of find) that users have gotten used to and we been keeping it the same to avoid confusion. You do make a good point for command-N, but it would also be slightly strange for command-n not to be part of the "File" menu as it is in most Mac programs. We do have it mind to try to shift it someday with a major release that would reconfigure some of the menu layouts as well.

In the meantime Command-Option-F is the shortcut for the internal filter, also tab moves the focus between the three main fields (including the filter search). Although shift-tab is more convenient to avoid tabbing into editing if using the list view display.

Command-N is the hotkey for "New Record" in Filemaker Pro, under the Records menu. If it's good enough for Apple....
In essence, it would be functioning in the exact same way in BP as it does in FMP.

Command-Tab? Isn't that for OS X's application switcher? Tab/Shift-Tab seem to do that for me. Though as you say, Tab (which is easier to press than Shift-Tab) also moves into editing....

Just tab and shift-tab, added command by mistake as we were talking about command before. Fixed it in the original post as well to avoid confusion.
